“Bodies in Urban Spaces” Start Point Announced Today

dorner2

As seen in the Washington Post, the DC premiere of “Bodies in Urban Spaces” turns the streets of the Penn Quarter into a dance floor. Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner and a troupe of DC dancers will be climbing, crawling and suspending themselves over passers-by on a moving “body trail” that will explore the 7th Street Corridor.

It all begins at 5:30pm at the Archives/Navy Memorial Metro Plaza at 7th and Pennsylvania Ave NW, this Friday and Saturday.

Want to see it? Meet us there or or follow us on Twitter @velocity_dc to get LIVE route updates and reports from the scene!

Open Call for Dancers

“Bodies in Urban Spaces”
by Willi Dorner, choreographer (Austria)
www.ciewdorner.at

Staged in Paris, London, Philadelphia and now Washington, DC, the cityscape becomes a dance floor with Bodies in Urban Spaces, created by Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner.

Bodies in Urban Spaces is a moving trail, choreographed for a group of local dancers. The performers lead the audience through selected parts of public and semi-public space, setting up a chain of physical interventions that appear quickly and only exist temporarily, allowing the viewer to perceive the same space or place in a new and different way – on the run.  “Bodies in Urban Spaces” invites residents and audiences to walk and rediscover their own city – thus establishing a stronger relationship to their neighborhoods and urban environments.

Seeking: Dancers and movement artists with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Freeclimbing
  • Contact and Partnering
  • Site-Specific and Outdoor dance installations

Rehearsals: All start at Archives/Navy Memorial metro plaza – 7th/Penn Ave NW

  • Sept 25                       4-8pm
  • Sept 26-27                2-8pm
  • Sept 28-Oct 1           4-8pm (mandatory)

Stipend: $100 per performer

Performances: Friday Oct 2 and Saturday Oct 3 @ 5:30pm

Bodies in Urban Spaces

bodiesStaged in Paris, London, Philadelphia and now Washington, DC, the cityscape itself becomes a dance floor with Bodies in Urban Spaces, created by Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner.

Dorner calls Bodies “A temporarily intervention in diversified urban architectonical environments. The intention is to point out the urban functional structure and to uncover the restricted movement possibilities and behaviour as well as rules and limitations”.

By working with dancers’ bodies in selected spots, these “interventions” provoke a thinking process – and also produce irritation! Passers-by, residents and audiences are motivated and prompted to reflect their urban surroundings, their own movements, behavior, and habits.

Moreover, “Bodies in Urban Spaces” invites residents and audiences to walk and rediscover their own city – thus establishing a stronger relationship to their neighborhoods and urban environments.

Vienna/Austria based dance company Cie. Willi Dorner was founded by Willi Dorner in 1999. Dorner’ss interdisciplinary works are developed in cooperation with artists and scientists of different fields, and have been presented at international festivals such as springdance NL, Kampnagel Hamburg, Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, Festival Paris Quartier d’été, Dansenshus Stockholm, Madrid En Danza, Dance Umbrella London, Tanz in Berlin and others.
