EDGEWORKS Dance Theater

edgeworks_profileLed by Founding Artistic Director and award-winning choreographer Helanius J. Wilkins, EDGEWORK Dance Theater (EDT) is Washington, DC’s premier all male contemporary dance company of predominately African-American men.  Known for their hard-hitting work, EDT aims to break down stereotypes through dance, utilizing a spectrum of performances, choreographic, and teaching styles, reflecting the diversity of experiences and perspectives of both its members and guest artists.

Through its mission, EDT provides a variety of arts programming and education services. EDT has performed throughout the United States including venues in Arizona, Pennsylvania, New York, Washington DC, and in Massachusetts at Jacobs’ Pillow Dance Festival; and internationally in Lithuania, Scotland, and Switzerland. EDT’s repertory includes the works of Artistic Director Helanius J. Wilkins as well as works by Earl Mosley, Kevin Wynn, Troy Powell, and Robert Moses among others. Encompassing physical extremes, EDT’s body of performance work is both dynamic and diverse. While pushing boundaries, it simultaneously challenges and affirms societal perceptions of male identity, revealing strength and vulnerability.

EDGEWORKS Dance Theater is one of DC’s fastest growing companies. The company is recognized for its award-winning choreography and has received critical acclaim from media including The Washington Post, Dance View Times, and Ballet Magazine-U.K. The company is the recipient of numerous awards including six Metro DC dance Awards.

EDGEWORKS Dance Theater will celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2011.
